Winter visitor to Asakawa River basin. Male has greenish-black head like male Mallard, but the species can be easily distinguished with its diagnostic broad dark spatulate bill.@ Generally, it is difficult to identify female ducks from those of other species because of similarity in plumage, but, thanks to the broad bill, female Northern Shoveler can be easily distinguished. The species feed by scooping on the surface with its spatulate bill like shovelling.
