Winter Visitor
Although the bird is a common winter visitor to Japan, the bird is rarely seen in Asakawa River basin. The four Chinese characters of the Japanese name each means "gold, black, and white on flight feathers," representing golden eyes, black body (except for flanks), and white on flight feathers.  Male: long black crest drooping from the head; Female: body brownish above the waterline, and not prominent shorter crest.
