One of the most representative hawks and eagles in the Asakawa River basin. Adultfs breast closely barred and finely barred underwings look whitish in whole that sometimes helps identification of the bird from afar. Mainly forages on small birds and animals, but sometimes seizes Little Egret and ducks. Quite often a Northern Goshawk is mobbed by crows in the air. The Red List of the Ministry of the Environment (Revised in 2006) designates the hawk as Near Threatened Species (NT).
