A representative woodpecker along with a Japanese pygmy woodpecker in the Asakawa River basin. Observed in mixed forests at Komiya Park and Naganuma Park, groves at bases of hills and at riverfronts. With a hard, abrupt voice ket ket, the bird is easily identifiable in the nearby trees. @Malefs crown and nape and part of mustachial stripe are red, while femalefs forehead is grey, which is an identification point.
