@As its Japanese name suggests, the species is the smallest woodpecker in Japan. Common resident in Asakawa River basin throughout the year. Forages moving around trunks and branches in woods, as well as riverside reed beds.  With its characteristic gGi gi gih voice, the species reveals its presence. Male and Female almost alike.@Male : Small red spots behind eyes, not always visible.
