The species is a popular wild bird in Asakawa River basin. In autumn, its high-pitched shriek is heard here and there | one of the charming autumnal sights of Japan. This voice is given to display territorial behaviour, and both sexes display them.
Male has brown crown and wide black eye-stripe, while Female has browner crown with fine wavy bars on underparts. Both sexes have strong hooked bills.  
A gsmall bird of prey,h the species sometimes preys on small animals and birds; it is primarily a meat-eater. At times impales prey on pointed twigs or attaches it between branches for reasons not fully understood.
