Although it is a common resident in Asakawa River Basin, sighting of the species in flatland parks is limited to winter between December and February in small numbers. They may move to hilly districts for the rest of season. The birdfs Japanese name gKiku-itadakih meaning "Chrysanthemum-wearing bird" derives its name from the bright yellow crown stripe. One of the smallest birds in Japan.
