No.561 Blue-and-white Flycatcher Cyanoptila cyanomelana

Rank : 2
Summer Visitor

The species enjoys high popularity as the star among summer visitors; with the malefs glossy blue upperparts as well as its melodious song | one of the top three songbirds in Japan | the bird justifies the high popularity. The bird usually migrates here from Southeast Asia in late April to start warbling in hill forests near streams. Until now, the earliest record of the birdfs warbling here is April 12, 1998 (at Hikagezawa, Ura-Takao).
Our Society holds an open bird-watching tour gTour to find Blue-and-white Flycatcher at Ura-Takaohin early May every year when many citizens enjoy songs of the species.   According to the data obtained from our researches on summer visitors, the number of the species had been on increasing trend until 2008, but the number decreased three years in a row since then. With its impressive figure and beautiful song, the species could well be the target for poaching, and careful conservation efforts are required.   The species is officially designated as the gBird of Hachioji City, hand it is a symbol of the verdant Hachioji City (See the following for an account of the selection.)

yAn account of the selection of gBird of Hachioji Cityhz
Blue-and-white Flycatcher was selected as the gBird of Hachioji Cityh in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of Hachiojifs municipalization in 1991. Our Hachioji-Hino Kawasemi Birding Society (then Hachioji Kawasemi Birding Society) had an intimate involvement in the selection.   Upon receipt of gRequest for establishing Bird of the Cityh, put forward by our Society, the City started off for the institution of City Bird. Out of five candidate species of the birds – Blue-and-white Flycatcher, Spot-billed Duck, Asian House-Martin, Crested Kingfisher, and Dollarbird – prepared in advance by the gBoard to select Bird of the Cityh, Blue-and-white Flycatcher has been selected as the Bird of Hachioji City through the poll of residents, and the species was officially instituted to become thegBird of Hachioji Cityhon the anniversary of Hachiojifs municipalization on October 1, 1991.
