A representative red bird in Asakawa River basin in winter, which enjoys high popularity at bird-watching tours. Feeds on seeds of mugworts and goldenrods in dry riverbeds.@
Three syllable warble, epee-you-eenf, or a soft esweeoo, cheweeoof
Male: red lores and forehead, scarlet back with brown streaks, and scarlet belly. Female: pale brown above and below with almost no red plumage. First observation of the species is mainly in mid-November, and the last in early part of April every year at Asakawa River basin.
