No.599 Eurasian Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula

Rank : 3
Winter Visitor
Winter visitor in the Asakawa River basin. Observation records are mainly for the period between the beginning of December to the beginning of April next year. In the beginning of spring, small flocks are seen pecking at cherry blossom buds. Like other finches, Eurasian Bullfinch has very short and thick bills. Male: Black cap and red cheek and throat are diagnostic. Grey above and below with black wings and tail. Female: Dark brown above and below with grey nape.
Subspecies Pyrrhula pyrrhula rosacea is also sometimes seen in the flocks of Eurasian Bullfinch(Pyrrhula pyrrhula griseiventris), but it is rather difficult to distinguish the bird from Eurasian Bullfinch because of the individual specificity of the red color.
