No.429 Azure-winged Magpie Cyanopica cyanus

Rank : 2
Common resident in Asakawa River basin, and can be seen throughout the year. As indicated in its Japanese name meaning "long tail," the speciesf diagnostic feature is its long tail, nearly half of its total length.  With its black cap, blue wings and tail, its plumage is good-looking, but when hearing its hoarse voice queei or gei, one is rather discouraged. Common bird in the neighbourhood of urban district; the species has a habit of transferring between trees in small flocks of several birds flying one by one. Common resident in northern Honshu, but no habitat in Kansai area (borderline being around Fukui, Gifu and Aichi Prefectures).  We hear some birders in Kansai area come all the way to see the species.
