Common bird in the southeastern part of China and Hongkong, the species has recently been visiting Japan, including neighbouring Akiruno City and along Tama River of Hachioji and Hino Cities. First observation of the species in this area was in October, 2010, at Ohtarumi. As its Japanese name suggests, its face is dark, and slightly bigger than Hwamei of the same family.@   According to the database of invasive alien species of the National Institute for Environmental Studies, the species was first identified at Miura Peninsula in 1988, with its distribution covering Iwate, Gunma, Saitama, Kanagawa Prefectures and Tokyo Metropolitan Area. Specified as the invasive alien species by Invasive Alien Species Act (2004).
